About Palm Springs & the desert: the back story

Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley are California’s desert escape: mid-century architecture, resort pools and the San Jacinto Mountains rising straight up from town.

Mid-century Palm Springs

The town’s mid-century houses, hotels and banks are a big draw, and Palm Springs Art Museum covers architecture as well as art.

Into the mountains

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway climbs into Mount San Jacinto State Park, where it is much cooler than the valley floor.

From October to May the desert is at its best; summer heat is extreme.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park is about an hour away; carry water and avoid hiking in the heat of the day.

Our advice: visit between autumn and spring, and plan outdoor time for the mornings.
